He fulfills the potential of each character, but then reaches down and pulls out something that gives them an extra layer, or takes them in another direction. ![]() His Netflix catalog shows that he’s gifted both in drama and comedy, and no matter what he plays, he’s able to bring something-a particular creative choice, an extra energy, a different interpretation-that nobody else could. And if you’re not a fan of Josh Charles, you should be. If you’re a Josh Charles fan and have been missing him, today is the perfect day to watch him on Netflix. It’s not a movie without its flaws, but it’s well worth watching just to see Charles pull the string and allow himself to unravel. Not only is his character trying to figure the man out but he’s also second-guessing his own thoughts and decisions. So, too, is his turn in 2016’s The Drowning as a psychologist who’s shocked when a young man he helped convict of murder reappears in his life. Charles plays both sides, and mixes them into one character, and it’s a lot of fun to watch. There’s that contrast between the inspirational coach on the court and the cynical man off the court, like when Gaines tells his prospect’s mother that her son can’t be paid even though the team’s success is bringing money into the school. But there’s a fire in his performance, too, because the character is something of a powder keg-a man who doesn’t like the system of NCAA athletics, but understands it too well and knows how to do what he has to do. Again, he strikes a delicate balance between what audiences expect of the character and where he can take it.Ĭoach Gaines is that motivating, hard-driving coach we’re used to seeing in sports movies and TV shows Charles is able to light a fire under certain scenes when they call for it. It’s not as grand as The Good Wife, but it’s just as compelling because of the way he plays the part. Charles has a meaty role in Netflix’s original film Amateur, playing a prep school basketball coach who signs a teenage phenom-and then has to help him navigate the game within the game. Netflix is also hiding a few gems from Josh Charles’ dramatic catalog as well. He knows how to find the humor and make it work for him, rather than the other way around. What’s great about him as a comedic actor is that the size of the part doesn’t matter he’s able to make an impression all the time, even if he’s playing a certain type or only has a small amount of screen time. He reprised the role in last year’s follow-up Wet Hot American Summer: Ten Years Later, and had more of a supporting role in the 2014 Nick Kroll comedy Adult Beginners. It could’ve been the most one-dimensional of characters-but Charles leaned into Blake’s inherent douchiness just enough, while bringing a natural charisma that made us want to like the guy even if we weren’t supposed to. ![]() He was a scene-stealer in 2015’s Wet Hot American Summer: First Day of Camp, playing Blake, Katie’s (Marguerite Moreau) then-boyfriend and an insufferable member of rival Camp Tigerclaw. But he’s also very, very funny, and after he left The Good Wife in 2013, appeared in comedies that showed how he’s also got a gift for making us laugh. But several of his other projects are available on Netflix, and they show whole other sides to him that fans might have overlooked.Ĭharles is primarily recognized as a dramatic actor, having delivered complex performances that bring out so many different layers to his characters. Years later, Will’s murder on The Good Wife remains one of the most upsetting TV deaths ever, and audiences still miss seeing Josh Charles on our small screens.
